Finally graduated from Linc
作者:Leon 日期:2024-04-27
I started learning LINC Home Study, a free, online English study program sponsored by Canadian governments for newcomers, three years and a quarter ago. A very nice instructor would call me with Whatsapp and Skype half an hour once a week to take classes. I'm very lucky to have joined the program which provided me with a systematic way to enhance listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities together. This morning, I finally got my graduate certificate with 4 eights(comparable to IELTs 8).
Before my departure to China two years ago, I told my instructor I might not continue to study because I would go back to China in the future years (which might be against the policy of the program). She encouraged me to continue for not being in Canada wouldn't be a problem since several of her other students were studying in Japan, Korean and Russia. Then I didn't give up and finally graduate today . So I really appreciated my instructor, who is very responsible for my study and gave me so many helps. She not only taught me the materials on LINC's website, but also gave me numerous other resources to study: TED Talks, YouTube videos and even IELTS exams with various of topics, such as AI, ChatGpt, history, biography of great people, medicals. She corrected my pronunciations and homework very patiently. And I really enjoyed the small talk with her at the beginning of every class. At first, the talk would be about 3 minutes. But with the advance of my degree, the time increased to from 15 to 20 minutes and the topics became broader and broader, like Canada's and China's economies and real estate markets, the pandemic in Canada and China, how to refurbish my house, my recent work, and more.
AN INTRODUCTION TO CHATGPT

-- This is my Linc English homework which is posted by my teacher as a recommended article on Linc's website. --
ChatGPT is based on OpenAI and is free for use now. During the past several months, ChatGPT has gained fast popularity globally.
People can easily use prompts to talk with ChatGPT and get human-like responses. It can talk about various topics with us. For example, you can ask it to explain Quantum Computing, how to make an “HTTP request” in Javascrip, or to make a calculation of “10 plus 9”. ChatGPT can even remember previous conversations and generate corresponding information in the follow-up talk. But once a brand-new conversation is started, the information in previous conversations will be lost and can’t be restored for the new session. People can click thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons to give feedback on the answers from ChatGPT, which is a useful way to train it to become smarter.

Summary of the story of Elon Musk
作者:leon 日期:2022-11-24
Elon Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria South Africa. He has two brothers. His father was so abusive that Musk’s childhood was full of violence and unhappiness. His mother found he was very smart and let him go to school a year early. Later he became crazy about computer games when he was 10. He then taught himself how to code and even sold a game software made by him to a PC magazine for $500 when he was only 12.
At the age of 17, Elon Musk moved from his hometown to the US to attend Pennsylvania University, graduating with dual bachelor's degrees in Economics and Physics at the age of 26. In 1995, he moved again to Silicon Valley to study energy storage technology at Stanford for a Ph.D. degree. Soon, he found the Internet industry would have huge business potential in the future, though most people thought the Internet was a fad and far away from monetization early in 1995. He then dropped out of school and started a new company, called ZIP2, with his brother.
Meanwhile, starting a business was not as easy as he previously thought. He didn’t have any money except for $100,000 worth of student debt, and he had to both work and live in a little office. Quickly he grasped a business opportunity that helped media companies convert their paper and print content into digital content. ZIP2 grew gradually and struck deals with some big clients, such as New York Times. 3.5 years later, Compaq acquired ZIP2 for $30.5 million, of which $22 million went to Musk. Suddenly, he became a multi-millionaire from a broke due.
Musk’s next goal was to transform the traditional banking industry, so he started a new company X.com, which was merged with another company and renamed as world-famous Paypal. The main feature of Paypal was that customers were able to email money to others rather than dealing with everything in cash. Because a payee would have to sign up for Paypal and automatically be recruited into the system. The more people using Paypal, the faster it would grow. With this smart way to grow exponentially, Paypal acquired a million customers in only a year. However, in October 2000, one and a half years after creating the company, Musk was unfortunately fired as CEO of Paypal. Later in 2002, EBAY purchased Paypal for $1.5 billion with Musk receiving $165 million.
As Musk became more supplicated in business, he kept thinking critically and beneficial things which would change the course of humanity. He came back to his dream of building electric cars, which was his field of study for his Ph.D. degree. In 2004, he invested $6.5 million in Tesla, a startup founded by other two persons, and became the chairman of the company. Between 2004 and 2008, Musk and his team worked relentlessly on producing their first car, the Tesla Roadster. And the car was released to the market in 2008.

Winning a Lottery
作者:leon 日期:2022-11-09
Jack won a big lottery prize of $10 million 3 years ago. He had imagined various scenarios to make a huge fortune, but winning a lottery was ranked the last in his fantasies. This was truly lady luck paid a visit. He still remembered the moment when he got the good news. He was repairing a luxury car for his customer in a 4S store. At first, he was too shocked to grasp his wrench, but then he started smiling like a fool to his colleagues.
He and his wife decided to say good riddance to their past boring life style in a flash. They both quit their jobs the next day. Then, they made a very long to-do list: Buying a luxury apartment, shopping every day, traveling around the world, having plastic surgeries, etc. It seemed that they would be in a whirlwind of activity in the following years.
