-- This is my Linc English homework which is posted by my teacher as a recommended article on Linc's website. --
ChatGPT is based on OpenAI and is free for use now. During the past several months, ChatGPT has gained fast popularity globally.
People can easily use prompts to talk with ChatGPT and get human-like responses. It can talk about various topics with us. For example, you can ask it to explain Quantum Computing, how to make an “HTTP request” in Javascrip, or to make a calculation of “10 plus 9”. ChatGPT can even remember previous conversations and generate corresponding information in the follow-up talk. But once a brand-new conversation is started, the information in previous conversations will be lost and can’t be restored for the new session. People can click thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons to give feedback on the answers from ChatGPT, which is a useful way to train it to become smarter.
ChatGPT has a lot of powerful functions which can highly help improve people’s efficiency in life and at work. For instance, it can teach people how to prepare a grocery shopping list, to make programs with different programming languages, and write jokes, short stories, CVs, resumes, and even legal documents.
On the other hand, the main purpose of the app is research. The more people use it, the more external feedback ChatGPT will get. Finally, the system will be continuously trained smarter and safer. However, occasionally the information it generated is incorrect or even misleading. Thus, a few safeguards are in place in the system to prevent it from generating improper information. It also has three limitations. First, some of the generations might be inaccurate. Second, it can’t do mathematics very well. Third, the information it generates might be outdated because its knowledge base is currently trained till 2021.
People should take cautious attitudes towards the fast popularity of ChatGPT, which is a double-edged sword to humans. It is undoubtful that people will enjoy numerous benefits from it in the future. But the era of “a World controlled by AI” seems to be very near to us.
