这个短语字面解释是“像钉子一样硬”、我们知道钉子是用铁或者其它非常坚硬的材料做成的。如果一个人像钉子一样硬的话，那人想必既顽固强硬又无情无义，是个相当难相处的人。

喝酒为什么要碰杯？

why do people clink glasses when they drink? the clinking of glasses goes back to ancient times. that's
when nobles wanted to kill each other by poisoning the food. wine was a very common drink, and it was easy to poison wine. to prove the wine was not poisoned, the host of a party would drink a drop of the wine of his guest to show it was safe. If the guest trusted the host, the guest would clink his glass against that of his host, clinking galsses was a sign of trust.

为什么人们喝酒时候要碰杯？碰杯的历史可以追溯到古代。那时候，喝酒很普遍，在酒里下毒也很容易。为了证明酒很安全，主人会把客人杯中的酒倒一点在自己杯子里，然后喝下，以证明酒没有被下药。如果客人相信主人，就会与之碰杯。碰杯代表信任和诚实。

Diogenes and Alexander
戴奥真尼斯和亚历山大

Diogenes, a famous Greek philosopher in 300 BC, said a good man was self-sufficient and did not need material wealth. He was perfectly at home in a large tub. One day, Alexander the Great approached him in his tub and said, " I am Alexander the Great." The king then asked Diogenes if he could do andthing for him. Diogenes replied," Yes, don't stand between me and the sun." A surprised Alexander declared,"If I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes."
